1 Book 1 School

What is 1 Book 1 School?

1 Book 1 School is a program that places a book in the hands of every student at Hogg MS. The students read the book, which is woven into a curriculum provided by our award-winning librarian Mary Chance, and ends with an amazing opportunity to meet the author of the book (and have the book autographed) on February 21, 2020. Our book for this upcoming school year is Refugee by Alan Gratz. It is a powerful story about three children fleeing their homelands. Our theme will be the concept of 'Home'. Refugee is a poignant novel about the plight of three refugees, and was on the New York Times Bestselling List for over a year. Page-turning, heartrending, and a perfect fit for our IB school. Hogg can't wait to share this timely topic and story with its students. Students will participate in engaging activities throughout the school year, leading up to the author event and Literacy Night. Reading a single book as a school builds community and gives Hogg parents, teachers, students a shared experience that celebrates literacy. Click here to learn more about this amazing read: www.alangratz.com/writing/refugee

What are the costs?

Through generous discounts offered by Blue Willow Bookshop, Hogg PTA is able to purchase the book for all students at a cost of approximately $4,000 for each grade level ($12,000 for the entire school). We hope to raise enough funds so that everyone can have a book in the Fall before our author visit in February.

1 Book 1 School Sponsorship Opportunities

Hogg PTA is looking for families and businesses willing to sponsor this year's 1 Book 1 School book drive. We hope to raise enough funds so that everyone can have a book by our esteemed author! If you or your business would like to sponsor a classroom set of 30 books, a grade level set, or even a school set of books, please contact president@hoggpta.org to make donation arrangements. Your generous donations of 30+ books will be recognized through special signage inside every donated book plus a public announcement during the author visit and Literacy Night. If you are interested in purchasing books in quantities under 30, click here.

2019-2020 Open PTA Positions: Get Involved!

This is the year for you to get more involved with your Hogg PTA! If you are interested in any of the following roles, please contact PTA President, Sasha Vaikhman.

Hogg Outdoors/Field Chair: Have you seen our new field? Isn't it gorgeous?! The Field Chair position would include checking on the field on a monthly basis to check for any issues (holes, broken sprinklers, etc.), communicating with coaches and staff to identify any needed maintenance, coordinating volunteers for occasional field clean up, and managing volunteers or contractors for weed control on track.

WatchDogs Chair: Calling all dads! We’re looking for a Razorback dad to chairWatch DOGS which is a program led by dads that commit to volunteering at the school.  Participants can work on various projects to support the school such as helping to restore the Hogg courtyard pond or organizing opportunities for dads to interact with the school community at events like Dads and Donuts.

This is a great program that encourages dads, grandfathers, uncles and all other important male figures to be seen and to help improve our school. This position would work with our VP of Programs to volunteer at Hogg PTA events, and possibly create new programs. This role can be easily combined with the Field Chair position, if interested.  To learn more contact Terri Hamm at programs@hoggpta.org.

Parents Book Club

Parents, are you looking for a good read over the winter break? The PTA will host two book club meetings this spring. The first will discuss Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood by Lisa Damour. Our second bookclub meeting will discuss Masterminds and Wingmen by Rosalind Wiseman.

We'll meet at A Second Cup in the evening, and keep an eye out for dates and times.
